KABUL, March 27 (Xinhua) -- At least five people have been killed and six others injured after heavy rains triggered flash floods across multiple provinces in Afghanistan over the past 24 hours, a spokesman for the National Disaster Management Authority said Thursday evening.
Hafiz Mohammad Yusuf Hammad said the floods swept through parts of the eastern provinces of Parwan and Paktia, as well as the southern provinces of Kandahar, Zabul and Helmand.
The disaster also caused extensive property damage, destroying or partially damaging 94 residential houses, washing away rural roads and inundating agricultural lands in the affected provinces, Hammad added.
Survey teams have been dispatched to the flooded areas to provide aid and assess the damage, the official said.
Afghanistan's weather department has issued fresh warnings for more rainfall in the coming days, raising concerns about further flooding in mountainous and vulnerable regions. ■
