ACCRA, March 27 (Xinhua) -- Ghana has withdrawn from hosting the 2026 African Swimming Championships, according to a statement by the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA) late Thursday.
According to the association, the withdrawal stems from the failure of the country's Sports and Recreation Ministry to approve the hosting of the championships as well as internal governance challenges.
"The association, on November 14, 2025, formally notified the ministry and sought its approval and acceptance to proceed with hosting the championships. Regrettably, no formal response has been received from the ministry to date," read the statement.
The 2026 African Swimming Championships were scheduled to take place in the Ghanaian capital from May 5 to 10, 2026.
The West African country was awarded the hosting rights for the 2026 African Swimming Championships at the previous one held in Cairo, Egypt, in April 2025. ■
