BEIJING, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.78 percent to 3,881.28 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.43 percent higher at 13,536.56 points.
The combined turnover of these two indices totaled nearly 2.08 trillion yuan (about 301.7 billion U.S. dollars), down from 2.43 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Shares related to the power, military equipment and optical fiber sectors led the gains, while oil and gas stocks suffered steep losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.5 percent to close at 3,251.55 points.
The STAR Composite Index, which reflects the performance of stocks on China's sci-tech innovation board, closed 3.24 percent higher at 1,639.06 points. ■
