BRUSSELS, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Belgian Federal Police confirmed to Xinhua on Monday night that two suspicious packages were found at Brussels-Midi station in the capital, prompting an evacuation and an ongoing security operation involving the defense ministry.

Federal police said they received information about the incident at around 5:20 p.m. local time and immediately took necessary measures at the scene.

Police confirmed that two suspicious packages had been found, but did not provide further details, including their exact location or the scale of the police deployment.

Federal officers are conducting checks at the scene together with Belgium's defense ministry, police said. DOVO, the ministry's bomb disposal unit, has been called in to examine the suspicious packages.

The exact nature of the objects has not yet been established, and checks are still under way, police added.

Belgium's national railway operator SNCB told Xinhua later on Monday that Brussels-Midi station had been evacuated in the afternoon after the two suspicious packages were discovered.

"Train traffic to and from Brussels is heavily disrupted. We are awaiting information from the security forces," the operator said in a statement on its website.
