COLOMBO, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's cabinet has approved the appointment of an expert committee to develop a national framework for the energy economy, as authorities move to address slowing investment in a sector identified as central to long-term economic growth.

The decision comes against a backdrop of weakened investment momentum, which the government attributes to gaps in coordination across key economic sectors. Officials have noted that limited integration has constrained the sector's ability to attract sustained capital, despite its priority status within national development plans.

The committee's mandate includes recommending measures to enhance cross-sector linkages and support the long-term development of the energy sector within a unified economic strategy.

The committee will be chaired by presidential advisor Hans Wijesuriya, with membership including Duminda Hulangamuwa and several ministry secretaries. The group has been tasked with preparing a framework aligned with national policies, strategies, and delivery mechanisms.

Authorities have identified the energy economy as a key pillar in achieving sustainable economic expansion, but have also acknowledged that progress has been uneven due to structural weaknesses. The new framework is expected to focus on improving coordination among sectors and accelerating investment flows.
