BERLIN, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Cologne has parted ways with head coach Lukas Kwasniok on Sunday as the Bundesliga side seeks a late-season turnaround in its fight to avoid relegation.

The decision came shortly after a dramatic 3-3 draw with rival Borussia Monchengladbach, a result that extended Cologne's winless run to six matches despite a spirited comeback.

Sporting director Thomas Kessler said the club had conducted an intensive review of its situation before opting to make a change on the touchline. "We have come to the conclusion that we need to give the team a new impulse for the final phase of the season," Kessler said.

He acknowledged Kwasniok's qualities, adding that "his football knowledge and expertise are beyond question," but admitted results had fallen short.

Cologne has managed only two league victories in the past four months, slipping dangerously close to the relegation play-off spot with seven matches remaining. Kwasniok, who joined from Paderborn in the summer of 2025, oversaw 29 matches in all competitions, winning seven before his departure.

Assistant coach Frank Kaspari has also left the club, while Rene Wagner will take charge on an interim basis. Wagner, previously part of Cologne's coaching staff, said he would approach the role with full commitment. "Along with the players, staff and the support of the club, I'll do everything in my power to ensure we remain in the Bundesliga," he said.

Cologne's position has deteriorated steadily in recent weeks, with too few points collected despite competitive performances. The pressure has been building for weeks, with supporters voicing frustration earlier this year as results failed to improve.

Upcoming fixtures, including key meetings with relegation rivals, are expected to play a decisive role in determining the club's fate. Cologne hopes the change in leadership will provide a timely boost as they attempt to secure survival in the closing weeks of the campaign.

With seven matches remaining, Cologne sits 15th in the Bundesliga with 26 points, two clear of 16th-placed St. Pauli in the relegation play-off spot.
