CAIRO, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Egypt on Sunday strongly condemned the recent attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank, calling them "a dangerous escalation" and "a flagrant violation of the rules of international humanitarian law."
The attacks, carried out under the protection of Israeli forces, aim at terrorizing Palestinian civilians, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, voicing deep concern over the escalation of the settlers' violence, warning it reflects a systematic plan to change the status quo and impose a fait accompli policy on the ground.
Such practices violate international legitimacy resolutions, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2334, and contradict the International Court of Justice's advisory opinion on illegality of occupation and settlement activities, the statement said.
Egypt urged the international community to stop the violations, ensure protection for Palestinian civilians, and hold those responsible accountable. It also called for de-escalation to pave the way for a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue. ■
