LILONGWE, March 19 (Xinhua) -- At least 13 people were killed and 35 others injured after heavy rains and floods hit Malawi between March 15 and 18, the country's Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) said on Thursday.
In an update signed by Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs Wilson Moleni, the department said that a total of 9,598 households have been affected, including 128 households displaced.
Most of the deaths were caused by collapsing houses or floods, it added.
Meanwhile, several roads in some of the affected councils have become inaccessible after bridges and sections of roads were washed away, according to the department.
The department said 12 evacuation camps have been established in six councils as authorities provide relief assistance to affected households.
On Feb. 21, the DoDMA said in a report released that at least 46 people had died since the onset of the 2025/2026 rainy season in November 2025.
The department has appealed to development partners, local and international non-governmental organizations, and the private sector to support response efforts through the provision of relief items, financial resources, technical assistance, and search and rescue operations. ■
