BAGHDAD, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Iraq strongly condemned the "dangerous escalation" targeting Iran's energy facilities, read a statement by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry on Thursday.
The strike constitutes a direct threat to the security and stability of the region and a "clear violation of the fundamental principles and rules of international law," it said.
It said targeting vital infrastructure, particularly energy facilities, is an "unjustified escalation" that will exacerbate regional tensions and expose economic interests and the safety of civilians to grave risks, negatively impacting the stability of global energy markets.
The ministry reiterated Iraq's firm stance calling for avoiding further escalation that could lead to "serious repercussions."
Iraq's statement followed reports that Israel launched an attack on Wednesday targeting Iran's offshore South Pars gas field. ■
