BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Multiple measures have been taken by the Brunei government to safeguard the country's environment, a government minister said on Monday.
Speaking at a meeting of the Legislative Council, Haji Muhammad Juanda Rashid, Brunei's minister of Development, said among the initiatives is the cleaning of the Brunei River to remove rubbish and improve water quality, and installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in public areas to curb illegal dumping.
Other measures include the installation of air quality monitoring systems, whereby the country has recorded a clean environment for 100 consecutive days with a good Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) level.
He also said Brunei's recycling rate has reached 23.1 percent, exceeding the national target. The country is also developing a waste-to-energy plant, aimed at improving waste management and reducing environmental pollution.
The country is also promoting renewable energy, including the development of solar power plants to reduce its carbon footprint. ■
