LIMA, March 15 (Xinhua) -- Peruvian presidential candidate Napoleon Becerra of the Workers and Entrepreneurs Party died on Sunday in a traffic accident while traveling to a campaign event in the country's south, according to local media reports.

According to the reports, the accident occurred in the Rumichaca area in southern Peru when Becerra was traveling by car to attend a campaign event in the Ayacucho region.

The news was confirmed by several individuals, including Emely Silva, a candidate for the Chamber of Deputies from the party.

Silva said some members of the party traveling with Becerra were injured in the accident. She has requested assistance from government authorities to arrange emergency transfers and medical treatment for the injured, as well as help transport Becerra's body.

Peru is scheduled to hold presidential and congressional elections on April 12 to elect a new president and vice presidents, as well as members of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

Becerra had long been involved in political activities and advocated strengthening public security, combating corruption, and promoting economic growth by supporting small and medium-sized enterprises.
