OTTAWA, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Canada's international merchandise trade deficit widened from 1.3 billion Canadian dollars (around 950 million U.S. dollars) in December to 3.6 billion dollars in January, Statistics Canada said Thursday.

According to the agency, total exports were down 4.7 percent in January, the largest percentage decline since April 2025, while total imports fell 1.1 percent.

Exports of motor vehicles and parts fell 21.2 percent to 5.4 billion dollars in January, the lowest level since September 2021. Exports of metal and non-metallic mineral products fell 8 percent, primarily due to lower shipments of unwrought gold to the United Kingdom, the agency said.

Additionally, aircraft and other transportation equipment and parts exports fell 16 percent in the month, it said.

When factoring in services trade, where exports fell 1.1 percent and imports rose 1.8 percent, Canada's total international trade deficit for January stood at 3.8 billion dollars, a steep increase from the 860 million dollar deficit recorded in December, said Statistics Canada.
