JUBA, March 13 (Xinhua) -- South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has committed to his country holding general elections in December as scheduled.
Kiir made the remarks on Thursday after receiving a briefing from National Elections Commission Chairperson Abednego Akok Kacoul on preparations for the December polls.
"President Kiir emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum in the preparations and indicated that the government will avail the necessary resources and logistical support required for the successful conduct of the elections in December 2026," the presidency said in a statement issued in Juba, the capital of South Sudan.
During the meeting, Akok provided an update on the electoral body's preparations, noting that plans are underway to announce the official election date in June.
South Sudan plans to hold its first general elections in December 2026 as part of the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan.
Akok said the elections will be conducted across 102 geographical constituencies across the ten states and three administrative areas. ■
