KABUL, March 12 (Xinhua) -- A special police unit has been established in the northern region of Afghanistan to ensure peace and security in the area, local media outlet Tolonews reported late Wednesday.
"With its headquarters in the northern Balkh province, the contingent, with a strength of 1,000 personnel, would be composed of those from the five northern provinces -- Balkh, Samangan, Jawzjan, Sari Pul and Faryab," Tolonews quoted Balkh police spokesman Hafiz Mohammad Eisa Waseq as saying.
The official did not provide more details. ■
