SYDNEY, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Australian software giant Atlassian on Thursday announced it will cut around 10 percent of its global workforce as part of an artificial intelligence (AI) push.
Mike Cannon-Brookes, the chief executive officer and co-founder of the Sydney-based Atlassian, said the cuts would affect around 1,600 employees, including 30 percent of the firm's Australian workforce.
He said that the lay-offs were primarily about adaptation and would allow Atlassian to self-fund further investment in AI and enterprise sales.
"We fundamentally believe people and AI create the best outcomes. Our approach is not 'AI replaces people'," he wrote in a notice to staff.
"But it would be disingenuous to pretend AI doesn't change the mix of skills we need or the number of roles required in certain areas. It does," he said.
Atlassian in February reported revenues of 1.59 billion U.S. dollars for the final quarter of 2025, an increase of 23 percent year on year. ■
