BAGHDAD, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani voiced Iraq's rejection and condemnation of the "unjust war" targeting Iran during a phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday, according to a statement from al-Sudani's media office.

During the call, al-Sudani renewed his condolences over the deaths of Iran's former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as well as members of his family and other Iranian citizens, wishing a speedy recovery to the innocent wounded.

Al-Sudani reiterated Iraq's commitment to the security and stability of the region, emphasizing the country's readiness to exert every effort to help end the conflict and restore dialogue and peaceful solutions.

He also stressed that while Iraq respects Iran's security and sovereignty and will not allow any party or individuals to use its territory to launch attacks against Iran, the attacks targeting Iraqi territory constitute a violation of Iraq's sovereignty and security, which are "unacceptable and undermine Iraq's efforts to end the war and restore dialogue."

For his part, Pezeshkian commended the Iraqi government's efforts to maintain regional stability and security and affirmed Iran's commitment to respecting Iraq's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The conversation came amid heightened regional tensions following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran starting on Feb. 28, to which Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on Israel and U.S. assets across the Middle East.
