MEXICO CITY, March 11 (Xinhua) -- America and Mexico goalkeeper Luis Malagon is set to miss this year's FIFA World Cup after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon, the Liga MX club said on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old was carried off on a stretcher in the first half of America's 1-0 win at Philadelphia in their CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16 first leg on Tuesday and subsequent tests confirmed the injury.

"The Club America informs that the medical tests carried out on Luis Angel Malagon show a rupture of the Achilles tendon," the Mexico City-based club said in a statement. "Our goalkeeper will undergo surgical treatment [and] the recovery time will depend on his progress."

Medical experts say the injury typically requires a recovery period of six to nine months, ruling him out of the World Cup in June and July.

Malagon has 19 Mexico caps since making his international debut in 2023.
