KABUL, March 11 (Xinhua) -- One person was killed and two others sustained injuries after an unexploded device went off in Surkh Rod district of the eastern Afghanistan Nangarhar province on Tuesday, provincial police spokesman Sayed Tayeb Hemad said Wednesday.

The deadly incident took place after an individual was transporting scraps and wasted items to a factory in Nangarhar's provincial Jalalabad for recycling, but the unexploded device among the goods went off, killing the man on the spot and injuring two others, the official added.

Unexploded ordnances, including anti-personnel mines, hand grenades and projectiles, which have been left over from the past more than four decades of wars and civil strife, often proved deadly in the post-war Afghanistan.

Previously, a similar incident left two children dead and injured five others in the Batikot district of Nangarhar province in mid last month.
