YANGON, March 11 (Xinhua) -- A total of 255,228 students sat for Myanmar's nationwide matriculation examination on Wednesday, the first day of the exam for 2026, the official television channel MRTV reported.

The figure represents 94.97 percent of the students who had registered for the exam, the report said, adding that a total of 268,753 students had registered at 887 exam centers.

The total number of students sitting for the exam this year has increased compared to the 208,889 students who took the matriculation exam in 2025, official data showed.

Union Minister for Education Chaw Chaw Sein visited schools in Kayin State to inspect the exam, the report said.

Myanmar authorities, including administrative officials, healthcare workers, fire service personnel, security officials, and traffic police, are also facilitating the examination process nationwide, the report added.

This year's exams will continue until March 17, the report said. In Myanmar, passing the examination allows students to attend universities.
