Statistics South Africa said the country's 2025 growth was primarily driven by finance, real estate and business services, agriculture, forestry and trade, and catering and accommodation.

JOHANNESBURG, March 11 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's gross domestic product (GDP) increased by 1.1 percent in 2025, according to data released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) on Tuesday.

The economy expanded by 0.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2025, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of growth, following a revised increase of 0.3 percent in the third quarter.

Stats SA said the country's 2025 growth was primarily driven by finance, real estate and business services, agriculture, forestry and trade, and catering and accommodation.

The South African government welcomed the figures, noting that the year 2025 recorded the highest annual growth rate since 2022.

"The fourth quarter performance helped lift annual GDP growth to 1.1 percent, the highest since 2022 when the economy expanded by 2.1 percent," said Nomonde Mnukwa, acting government spokesperson. "Government believes that the reforms implemented through Operation Vulindlela and the government/business partnership are key enablers of this sustained growth."

Stats SA also reported that expenditure on GDP increased by 1.4 percent in 2025, compared to a 0.4 percent increase in 2024. Net exports, however, contributed a negative 1.0 percentage point to the total growth in expenditure.
