BUCHAREST, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Romania may temporarily host U.S. military forces and equipment if the country's parliament approves a request discussed during a meeting of the Supreme Council for National Defence (CSAT), Romanian President Nicusor Dan said on Wednesday.
Dan said the discussions focused on the possibility of allowing U.S. assets to use Romanian bases amid the ongoing Middle East conflict involving Iran. The U.S. equipment under consideration includes aerial refueling aircraft and satellite communications systems that could be stationed at Mihail Kogalniceanu air base near the Black Sea coast.
The deployment would be "defensive" and conducted within the framework of the Romania-U.S. strategic partnership, he added.
Sources cited by local media Digi24 said approximately 400-500 U.S. personnel and related equipment could be deployed to the Mihail Kogalniceanu and Campia Turzii military bases.
The move requires parliamentary approval before being implemented. The deployment is expected to be authorized for an initial period of 90 days. Any extension of the mission would need to be reviewed again by the CSAT.
During the nearly two-and-a-half-hour meeting, council members also examined developments in the Middle East conflict, the situation of Romanian citizens in the region, and the economic impact of the war, including rising global oil prices.
Wednesday's meeting marked the first CSAT session since Nov. 24, 2025, when the council discussed Romania's National Defence Strategy. ■
