BEIRUT, March 11 (Xinhua) -- At least 15 people were killed and 24 others injured in a series of Israeli airstrikes against Lebanon from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning, Lebanon's Public Health Ministry said.
The airstrikes targeted several areas in southern Lebanon, the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon, and the capital of Beirut, according to statements issued by the ministry's Emergency Operations Center.
In southern Lebanon, three young men were killed in the municipality of al-Sharqiya after an Israeli warplane struck a house shortly after midnight.
In the town of Qana in Tyre district, five people were killed and five others injured in successive air raids, while one person was killed and eight others wounded in a strike on the al-Hosh area of Tyre.
In the municipality of Hannaouiyah, also in Tyre district, three people, including a paramedic, were killed in consecutive strikes.
Israeli airstrikes also targeted several other locations in the south, including a prayer hall in Jibchit, the vicinity of a public school in the municipality of Arabsalim, and the town of Zawtar al-Sharqiya.
In eastern Lebanon, one person was killed and two others injured in an airstrike on the village of Zilaya in Bekaa.
Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes targeted Beirut's southern suburbs throughout the night. Israel issued a new warning early Wednesday urging residents to evacuate parts of the area ahead of planned strikes.
On Wednesday morning, an Israeli strike targeted an apartment in the Aisha Bakkar area in central Beirut, causing casualties. Israeli sources claimed the strike targeted an apartment linked to Al-Jamaa al-Islamiya, also known as the Islamic Group.
However, the Islamic Group denied the claim in a statement, rejecting reports that one of its offices or members had been targeted. The group said some media outlets had rushed to report that an administrative office belonging to it was struck in the raid and that several of its members were killed without verifying the information.
Separately, Hezbollah said in statements that its fighters targeted an Israeli force advancing near the southern border town of Aitaroun overnight. The group added that it had attacked gatherings of Israeli soldiers and vehicles at the al-Marj military site opposite the Lebanese border village of Markaba and at the newly established Markaba position, and also targeted two concentrations of Israeli forces near the Manara site and south of the city of Khiam.
On March 2, Hezbollah announced the launch of rockets from Lebanon toward Israel for the first time since a ceasefire was declared on Nov. 27, 2024, prompting the Lebanese government to announce a ban on its security and military activities.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army launched what it described as an "offensive military campaign" against Hezbollah, carrying out intense airstrikes on multiple Lebanese areas and border ground incursions. ■
