SYDNEY, March 11 (Xinhua) -- A woman has been arrested after allegedly firing multiple gunshots at police during a pursuit in eastern Australia on Tuesday night.

The police force in the state of New South Wales (NSW) said on Wednesday that officers in the town of Grafton, 490 km northeast of Sydney, stopped a vehicle at around 8:50 p.m. on Tuesday and located and seized a knife as well as a small amount of ammunition during a subsequent search.

The driver, a 31-year-old woman with a learner's permit, was issued a future court notice and had her permit suspended.

Around one hour later, police located the same woman driving the same vehicle and initiated a pursuit when she failed to stop as directed.

During the pursuit, the woman allegedly fired multiple shots at police. The vehicle stopped a short time later and the woman exited and pointed a pistol at officers and herself before re-entering the car and driving from the scene.

She was arrested when she stopped and again pointed the pistol at police before attempting to break into a home.

The woman was taken to a nearby police station and charged with several offenses, including discharging a firearm with intent to resist arrest, using an unregistered firearm, and breaking and entering while armed with a dangerous weapon.

Nobody was injured and no vehicles were damaged during the incident, police said.
