BAGHDAD, March 11 (Xinhua) -- The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella group for Iraq's pro-Iranian militias, said on Wednesday that its fighters carried out 291 drone and missile attacks against "occupation bases" in Iraq and the region over the past 12 days, causing U.S. casualties.

In a statement, the group said its fighters conducted 31 operations in the past 24 hours alone, using "dozens of drones and missiles against occupation bases in Iraq and the region." No further details were provided, with the group promising more information later.

Separately, late Tuesday, the group claimed it had shot down a U.S. MQ-9 drone in northern Basra province using the "appropriate weapon," justifying the act as defending national sovereignty.

The attacks come amid heightened regional tensions following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran since Feb. 28, which triggered Iranian missile and drone attacks on Israel and U.S. assets across the Middle East.
