DAMASCUS, March 10 (Xinhua) -- Several artillery shells fired from Lebanese territory landed near the town of Serghaya, west of Damascus, the Syrian state news agency SANA reported Tuesday.
In a statement, Syrian authorities accused the Lebanese Hezbollah group of launching artillery rounds toward Syrian army positions in the area.
Syrian military officials said they had observed reinforcements for Hezbollah arriving along parts of the Syrian-Lebanese border and were monitoring developments while assessing the situation, said the report.
The army said it had also contacted the Lebanese army over the incident and was evaluating appropriate response measures.
"The Syrian Arab Army will not tolerate any aggression targeting Syrian territory," the statement said.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
Tensions have occasionally flared along the rugged border between Syria and Lebanon, where porous mountain terrain has long served as a corridor for fighters and arms during Syria's years-long conflict. ■
