ABU DHABI, March 9 (Xinhua) -- Two people were injured after debris from intercepted aerial threats fell in two locations in the capital of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Abu Dhabi authorities said on Monday.

The incidents occurred following successful interceptions by the country's air defence systems, according to the Abu Dhabi Media Office. One incident resulted in a minor injury to a Jordanian national, while the other caused a moderate injury to an Egyptian national.

The development came amid heightened regional tensions following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran starting on Feb. 28, to which Iran responded with missile and drone attacks on Israel and U.S. assets across the Middle East.

The Ministry of Defense of the UAE said Sunday that its air defense systems had intercepted 16 ballistic missiles and 113 drones launched toward the country earlier in the day.

Since the start of the attacks, a total of 238 ballistic missiles and 1,422 drones had been detected, with most intercepted by air defense systems, it added.
