VIENTIANE, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Lao people on Sunday celebrated International Women's Day with special gifts and vibrant festivities, expressing love and gratitude while acknowledging the essential roles women play in families and their contributions to society.

Chansouda, a 29-year-old office worker in the Lao capital Vientiane, chose to honor the occasion this year by taking her mother on a short trip, hoping to spend quality time together and show appreciation for her mother's love and sacrifices.

"My mom has spent most of her life taking care of our family, so I thought it would be nice for us to travel together, even for a short trip, to relax and enjoy the moment," Chansouda told Xinhua.

She said that as she has grown older, she has come to better understand the important role her mother played in raising her and her siblings.

"A mother always wants the best for her children without expecting anything in return," she said.

The occasion also allowed many husbands to express appreciation for the unwavering love and dedication their wives provide.

Sengxay, a 37-year-old resident of Vientiane, prepared a special dinner and a small gift for his wife to express his appreciation for her dedication to their family. He said his wife's support allows him to focus fully on his work, as she takes care of their son, their household, and even his parents.

"I wanted this day to be special for her. She always encourages me to give 100 percent to my work, and whenever I feel tired or discouraged, she reminds me to keep moving forward and become better," he said.

"I am proud of my wife, and I am grateful for everything she does for our family," he added, noting that women help build strong families and support the success of their loved ones.

Toukta, a resident of Vientiane, hosted a dinner party with family and friends to celebrate the festival.

"This occasion is a great time to recognize the care, support, and dedication women provide every day," Toukta said.

She added that such celebrations also highlight women's vital roles in families and communities, reminding everyone of the love and encouragement they offer daily.
