JOHANNESBURG, March 8 (Xinhua) -- South African police have intercepted two separate drug shipments with a combined value of 2.8 million rands (about 169,000 U.S. dollars) at OR Tambo International Airport this week, local media reported on Sunday.
During a routine inspection at a cargo warehouse on Wednesday, police officers uncovered a consignment of crystal meth valued at 2.2 million rands, the report said, citing national police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
In a separate operation on Thursday, police discovered dagga worth 672,000 rands concealed in eight large boxes.
Investigations are underway to track down those responsible for the consignments.
South Africa continues to face significant challenges as both a major domestic market and a key transit hub for international drug trafficking networks. ■
