TRIPOLI, March 6 (Xinhua) -- The Libyan Attorney General's Office has announced that it has identified and issued the arrest warrant for three suspects in the killing of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, a son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
The arrest order was issued after preliminary investigation procedures were completed and evidence was collected, the office said in a statement posted on its official Facebook page late Thursday.
Saif al-Islam, long seen as a significant and polarizing figure in Libya since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising ended his father's rule, was assassinated on Feb. 3 by four armed men who stormed his residence in Zintan, about 136 km southwest of the capital Tripoli.
Detailing the findings of the investigation, the office said the perpetrators had lain in wait for the victim at his residence and attacked him in the courtyard in a narrow space that prevented him from escaping.
The attackers then aimed their automatic weapons at the victim and fired a barrage of bullets, leading to his death at the scene.
In November 2021, Saif al-Islam made his first public appearance in years when he filed to run in Libya's presidential election, but his candidacy was later rejected by the High National Elections Commission. ■
