SEOUL, March 4 (Xinhua) -- The appeal trial of former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was sentenced to five years in prison in the first-instance trial for allegedly obstructing an attempted arrest by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO), began Wednesday at the Seoul High Court, Yonhap News Agency reported.

The former president was convicted in January over allegations including blocking the CIO's attempt to detain him following the emergency martial law declaration on Dec. 3, 2024. Both the defense and the special counsel team filed appeals against the ruling.

Yoon is facing a total of eight trials in connection with the martial law attempt, his wife's alleged corruption and the death of a young Marine Corps in 2023, Yonhap said.

In a separate case on Feb. 19, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in the first-instance ruling for leading an insurrection over his martial law declaration.
