SYDNEY, March 3 (Xinhua) -- An armed man has been shot dead by police at a residential complex in inner-Sydney following reports he had assaulted two women.

The police force in the state of New South Wales (NSW) said that officers were deployed to a unit complex in the inner-city suburb of Potts Point around 10:50 a.m. on Tuesday following reports that a man armed with a knife had entered the complex and assaulted two women, aged 56 and 48.

Officers arrived and deployed a taser against the man, but it was ineffective, and he was subsequently shot after allegedly threatening police.

NSW Police Force Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna told reporters on Tuesday afternoon that the man was declared deceased at the scene.

He said that the two women were residents of separate units within the complex and were both hospitalized with head and facial injuries not considered life-threatening.

Neither was believed to be known to the man who was shot by police, McKenna said.

A crime scene has been established at the complex, and the investigation into the incident will be reviewed by police integrity bodies.
