Since returning to the White House in early 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly suggested that the United States should acquire Greenland, even claiming he would not rule out military force to secure the island. Canada has voiced support for Denmark and Greenland.

OTTAWA, March 2 (Xinhua) -- Canada and Greenland on Monday signed a Joint Declaration of Intent on critical minerals and energy cooperation, the Department of Natural Resources of Canada said.

The declaration was signed between Canada's Department of Natural Resources and Greenland's Ministry of Business, Mineral Resources, Energy, Justice and Gender Equality.

Both parties stated that the move is based upon the principles of collaboration and mutual benefit, following the strengthening of bilateral ties marked by Canada's newly established consulate in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, on Feb. 6.

The cooperation came amid heightened regional tensions. Since returning to the White House in early 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly suggested that the United States should acquire Greenland, even claiming he would not rule out military force to secure the island. Canada has voiced support for Denmark and Greenland.
