BUDAPEST, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- World Aquatics on Thursday announced the cancellation of the Diving World Cup stop in Zapopan, Mexico, originally scheduled for March 5-8.
In a statement, the governing body said the decision was made in consultation with local organizers, including Aquatics Mexico, the Mexican Federation of Diving and High Diving and CODE Jalisco.
The move follows a surge of violence in several states including Jalisco, where Zapopan is located, following the capture and death of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera on Sunday.
"The safety and participation of all athletes remains a fundamental priority for World Aquatics," the statement said.
According to World Aquatics, qualification for the Diving World Cup Super Final, to be held in Beijing, China from May 1 to 3, will be determined based on results from the Montreal stop. ■
