DAMASCUS, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Syrian interim authorities said Thursday that they had completed a prisoner and hostage exchange in the southern province of Sweida that led to the release of dozens of civilians, describing the move as part of ongoing efforts to calm tensions after months of unrest in the region.

Interior authority's spokesman Noureddin al-Baba said to state media that the operation resulted in the freedom of 86 Syrian families, including 25 civilians who had been abducted and held by armed groups. In return, 61 detainees held by the Syrian state authorities were released.

The exchange was carried out under the framework of the so-called Amman agreement, a set of understandings aimed at de-escalating violence in Sweida and restoring a political and peaceful track within what officials describe as Syria's national unity.

Sweida, a predominantly Druze province, has seen repeated bouts of instability over the past year, marked by armed clashes, kidnappings and road blockades, amid widespread frustration over security conditions and economic hardship. Recent mediation efforts involving local leaders and regional actors have sought to reduce violence and prevent further escalation.

Syrian officials say Thursday's exchange is a step toward easing tensions but acknowledge that significant challenges remain, including resolving the fate of missing persons.
