RIYADH, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Saudi Aramco, the national petroleum and natural gas company of Saudi Arabia, announced on Thursday major progress in its gas expansion strategy.

Aramco revealed in a statement the start of production at Jafurah, the Middle East's largest unconventional gas field, and the commencement of operations at Tanajib gas plant, one of the world's largest gas plants on the Arabian Gulf.

It stated that the plants would support Aramco's goal to boost sales gas production capacity by approximately 80 percent by 2030 compared to 2021 levels, reaching around 6 million barrels of oil equivalent per day of total gas and associated liquids' production.

Amin H. Nasser, Aramco president and CEO, said the two projects "significantly strengthen Aramco's gas portfolio" and underpin its long-term growth strategy, helping to meet rising domestic demand and supply high-value liquids.

Aramco began producing the first unconventional shale gas at Jafurah in December 2025. Covering about 17,000 square km, the field is estimated to contain 229 trillion standard cubic feet of raw gas and 75 billion stock tank barrels of condensate.

Meanwhile, Tanajib gas plant, which also started operations in December 2025, is expected to reach a raw gas processing capacity of 2.6 billion standard cubic feet per day in 2026.
