BAGHDAD, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said on Tuesday that resolving the issue of Islamic State (IS) detainees transferred from Syria requires "concerted efforts," noting that many of the detainees hold European nationalities.
Hussein made the remarks during a meeting in Baghdad with State Secretary of the German Federal Foreign Office, Geza Andreas von Geyr.
Hussein said that resolving the IS detainees issue requires "concerted efforts," highlighting the presence of numerous terrorists of European nationalities and the significant "financial burdens" associated with their transfer and detention, according to an Iraqi Foreign Ministry statement.
The two also discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation, particularly in combating terrorism.
On Feb. 13, Iraq's National Center for International Judicial Cooperation reported that 5,704 IS detainees, representing 61 nationalities, had been transferred by the U.S. military from Syrian prisons to Iraq. ■
