CANBERRA, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Australia's greenhouse gas emissions fell by 1.9 percent in the year to September 2025 as a result of record-high renewable electricity generation, according to government data.

A quarterly report published on Wednesday by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) revealed that Australia produced 444.3 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions in the year to September 2025.

It marks a fall of 8.5 million tons, or 1.9 percent, from 452.8 million tons in the preceding 12 months.

The report said that the decline was primarily driven by a 3.1 percent fall in emissions in the electricity sector due to rising renewable generation and the ongoing displacement of coal-fired generation.

The Australian Energy Market Operator said in a report that renewable sources of energy supplied 42.7 percent of power to the National Electricity Market in the third quarter of 2025, which was surpassed by a record-high of 51.0 percent in the final quarter of the year.

Chris Bowen, Australia's minister for climate change and energy, said in a statement that emissions for the year to September were 27.4 percent lower than 2005 levels.

The federal government has committed to reducing emissions by 43 percent from 2005 levels by 2030 and by at least 62 percent by 2035.

"We are on track to meet our climate targets if we stay the course and continue to lift our efforts," Bowen said.

Preliminary data for the final quarter of 2025 included in the report estimated national emissions of 443.1 million tons for the calendar year, a decrease of 2.0 percent from 2024 and of 27.6 percent from 2005.
