ADEN, Yemen, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- At least nine passengers were killed on Tuesday when a truck collided with a minibus in Yemen's southern province of Abyan, a local security official said.
The official said on condition of anonymity that the crash occurred on the main road in the Lahmar area of Al Mahfid district.
Nine passengers aboard the bus were confirmed dead at the scene, and several others were injured, according to the official.
Local residents rushed to the scene and helped transport the injured to nearby health centers, he added.
Videos on social media showed the bus engulfed in flames following the collision, with extensive damage visible.
Traffic accidents are common in Yemen, where years of conflict have severely damaged roads and infrastructure. With major routes often disrupted, civilians are forced to use dangerous alternative roads, increasing the risk of fatal crashes.
Yemen's crisis began in late 2014 when the Houthis group seized the capital Sanaa and large swathes of the north, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in 2015 in support of the Yemeni government. The conflict has since spiraled into what the United Nations describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis. ■
