BEIJING, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will pay an official visit to China from Wednesday to Thursday at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
Merz was born in Brilon, the North Rhine-Westphalia state of Germany, in 1955. He graduated from the University of Bonn and the University of Marburg.
He previously served as chairman of the CDU/CSU (comprising the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union) parliamentary group. In February 2022, he was elected chairman of the CDU. In May 2025, he assumed office as chancellor. ■
