MANILA, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Wednesday said it has approved a loan of 60.9 million U.S. dollars to improve water supply and sanitation in urban communities in Port Moresby and Vanimo, Papua New Guinea (PNG).
The ADB's financing includes a 30-million-dollar regular ordinary capital resources loan and a 30.9-million-dollar concessional ordinary capital resources loan.
The PNG government will provide 3 million dollars in counterpart financing. An additional 1.5-million-dollar technical assistance grant from the ADB will support digital systems integration, institutional strengthening, and exploration of public-private partnership opportunities, the Manila-based bank said in its press release.
More than 160,000 people in Port Moresby and Vanimo will directly benefit from the expanded access to a safe and reliable water supply, the ADB said, adding that the project will also upgrade sanitation facilities to ensure treated wastewater is safely discharged and poses no risk to public health or the environment. ■
