TEHRAN, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- Iran's border guards have seized a cache of illicit weapons intended to be smuggled into the country through its northeastern border with Afghanistan, state-run IRIB news agency reported on Tuesday.
The arms cache, concealed inside a black plastic bag hidden beneath the ground, was discovered and seized Sunday night in Taybad County in Khorasan Razavi province following a series of technical and intelligence operations, the IRIB quoted Majid Shoja, the province's border police commander, as saying.
The seized items included eight M1911 pistols, 16 magazines, 12 explosive detonators, and one fragmentation hand grenade, said Shoja, adding that the traffickers attempted to smuggle them into other Iranian provinces.
The weapons have been handed over to the relevant Iranian authorities, he said. ■
