BEIRUT, Feb. 24 (Xinhua) -- The Lebanese Army said on Tuesday that Israeli forces opened fire near a newly established observation post along the southern border, the latest incident in a frontier area where tensions remain high.

In a statement, the Lebanese Army Command said that troops were setting up a monitoring point in the Sarda-Marjeyoun border area when the vicinity came under fire from the Israeli side. An Israeli drone was also observed flying at low altitude, broadcasting warnings aimed at forcing the soldiers to withdraw.

The army said it had issued orders to reinforce the position, maintain its deployment at the site, and respond to the sources of fire.

It added that the incident is being addressed through coordination with the committee overseeing the ceasefire agreement and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

A U.S.- and French-brokered ceasefire agreement between Hezbollah and Israel took effect on Nov. 27, 2024, ending hostilities that erupted in connection with the war in the Gaza Strip.

Despite the agreement, the Israeli army continues to carry out occasional strikes in Lebanon, claiming they are aimed at removing Hezbollah "threats." Israeli forces have also maintained a presence at five key positions along the Lebanese border after the deadline for their full withdrawal expired on Feb. 18 last year.
