KABUL, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- At least five commuters were killed when their vehicle plunged into a river in northern Afghanistan's Badakhshan province on Saturday, a local police official said.
The mishap occurred when the car overturned due to reckless driving and fell from the Tishkan bridge into the river below, according to Ehsanullah Kamgar, spokesman for the provincial police.
The latest tragedy follows two separate road accidents in the province's Kishim district on Friday, which left one person dead and four others injured.
Deadly road accidents remain a persistent threat across Afghanistan, often caused by poor road conditions and reckless driving. The risk is particularly acute in rugged provinces like Badakhshan, where mountainous terrain and limited infrastructure force many communities to rely on hazardous river transport. ■
