BEIRUT, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Saturday strongly condemned Israeli airstrikes carried out overnight by land and sea, targeting the Sidon area in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa region in eastern Lebanon.
Aoun said in a statement that the continued attacks were "a deliberate hostile act aimed at undermining the diplomatic efforts" to consolidate stability and halt Israeli hostilities against Lebanon.
He said the strikes constituted "a new violation of Lebanon's sovereignty and a clear breach of international obligations," adding that they reflected disregard for the will of the international community, particularly UN resolutions calling for full compliance with Resolution 1701 in all its provisions.
Aoun renewed his call on countries "sponsoring stability in the region" to assume their responsibilities to halt the attacks and exert pressure to ensure respect for international resolutions.
On Friday, Israel launched heavy airstrikes on the Ain al Hilweh camp in the city of Sidon and several towns in the Bekaa region, killing over 10 people and wounding more than 35 others. ■
