GAZA, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinian technocratic committee tasked with administering the post-war Gaza Strip said on Thursday it is recruiting candidates for a transitional police force in Gaza.

The National Committee for the Administration of Gaza is recruiting "qualified candidates for a professional, accountable, transparent, and merit-based transitional police force in Gaza," it said in a statement on social media.

"With a ceasefire now in place and the Committee about to take on its responsibilities in Gaza, it is time to give an opportunity to those prepared to carry responsibility and uphold the rule of law," it said.

According to the committee's website, applicants must be Gaza residents aged 18 to 35, with good physical fitness and no criminal record.

Ali Shaath, a former Palestinian Authority official who leads the committee, said on Thursday that about 2,000 people have applied to serve as transitional police officers in Gaza.

Police forces in Gaza have been under the control of Hamas, which has not yet responded to the committee's statement but has said it is ready to hand over the governance of Gaza to the committee.
