RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Unseeded Ignacio Buse of Peru reached the Rio Open quarterfinals on Thursday with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over third seed and local favorite Joao Fonseca.
World No. 91 Buse won 76 percent of his first-serve points and struck eight aces en route to victory in two hours and 26 minutes on the outdoor clay of the Jockey Club Brasileiro.
Fonseca, the world No. 38, committed 43 unforced errors and converted just one of nine break point opportunities as he continued his poor start to the year following early exits at the Australian Open in January and last week's Argentina Open.
Buse will meet Italian Matteo Berrettini in the next round of the ATP 500 event.
In other round-of-16 results on Thursday, Argentine eighth seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry beat Lithuanian qualifier Vilius Gaubas 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 and Jaime Faria of Portugal, who qualified as a lucky loser, overcame Bosnia and Herzegovina's Damir Dzumhur. ■
