BERLIN, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Patrik Schick was being congratulated before the final whistle on Tuesday after a two-goal display powered Bayer Leverkusen to a 2-0 win over Olympiacos in the UEFA Champions League playoffs.

The 30-year-old Czech striker was named man of the match as the 2023-24 Bundesliga champion took control of the tie and moved closer to the round of 16.

Schick's brace marked the first time a Leverkusen player had scored twice in a Champions League knockout match since Michael Ballack did so against Liverpool in 2002. The goals were Leverkusen's 200th and 201st in the competition.

Sporting director Simon Rolfes praised Schick's composure and overall contribution.

"He is ice-cold in front of goal," Rolfes said, pointing to the striker's development in recent seasons. "Working that intensively is not a striker's favorite part, but he does it, and that strengthens the team's energy."

Head coach Kasper Hjulmand said Schick's performance echoed what he had seen in training. "He was sharp as a razor," the Dane said.

After a turbulent period linked to the club's restructuring ahead of the 2025-26 season, Schick has emerged as a stabilizing figure. "We benefit greatly from his experience," Rolfes added.

Leverkusen has been closing ground domestically and sits among the top six in the Bundesliga, while its European form has continued to boost confidence.

Schick, who has 49 international caps, said he was pleased to be contributing but stressed the importance of staying focused for the second leg next Tuesday. He also referenced an upcoming league match against Union Berlin as part of a demanding schedule.

German tabloid Bild dubbed Schick "Mr European Cup," citing his decisive goals earlier in the competition against Benfica and Manchester City that helped keep Leverkusen's campaign alive.
