CARACAS/WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodriguez met here on Wednesday with Commander of U.S. Southern Command Francis Donovan on security issues, according to the Venezuelan government and the U.S. Southern Command.

Venezuela and the United States agreed to jointly combat drug trafficking and terrorism in the region during a meeting in Caracas between Rodriguez and Donovan, Venezuelan communications minister Miguel Perez Pirela said.

"The two countries agreed to work on designing a bilateral cooperation agenda to combat illicit drug trafficking and terrorism, as well as to jointly address migration," Pirela said on social media.

The U.S. Southern Command said in a press release that Donovan, Charge d'Affaires to U.S. Venezuela Affairs Unit Laura Dogu, and U.S. Acting Assistant Secretary of War for Homeland Defense and the Americas Joseph Humire met with Venezuelan government officials in Caracas on Wednesday.

"Discussions focused on the security environment, steps to ensure the implementation of President Donald Trump's three-phase plan -- particularly the stabilization of Venezuela -- and the importance of shared security across the Western Hemisphere," the press release said.

The talks followed a visit to Venezuela by U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, where the two sides mulled the energy agenda within the framework of Venezuela's energy sovereignty and bilateral relations.
