DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Saturday called for increased domestic financing and sustained political commitment in Africa's fight against malaria, the Directorate of Presidential Communications said in a statement.

Addressing a high-level media meeting on the sidelines of the 39th African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa, Hassan emphasized that eradicating malaria requires African ownership, accountability, and long-term investment.

Organized by the AU in collaboration with the African Leaders' Alliance for Malaria Action (ALMA), the meeting focused on mobilizing domestic resources, reducing reliance on foreign aid, and reinforcing health systems across the continent, the statement said.

Hassan noted that malaria control is not only a health priority but also a development and economic agenda critical to Africa's human capital growth.

Tanzania, which hosts ALMA, has built strong accountability mechanisms and results-based implementation strategies to accelerate progress, she added.

The president also highlighted Tanzania's investments in research and innovation through the Ifakara Health Institute, expanded use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, malaria vaccines, and improved patient monitoring.

According to the president, malaria interventions have been integrated into primary healthcare and the Universal Health Coverage program to widen access and reduce mortality.
