ISTANBUL, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Police detained 1,109 suspects in one of the largest operations targeting criminals and wanted suspects in Istanbul, local authorities announced on Wednesday.
The Istanbul Police Department said nearly 2,500 officers joined the overnight operation on Tuesday, along with a police helicopter and five boats from the marine police units.
During the operation, officers carried out identity checks on 374,952 people across the city. Among those detained were 595 suspects wanted for various crimes, police said.
Police also inspected hundreds of public venues and carried out extensive traffic checks across the city, issuing fines and taking administrative measures against violators.
Istanbul police regularly carry out security sweeps under the name "Peace Istanbul" to enhance public safety and target wanted suspects. ■
